Why choose Natural Skincare? Harmful Chemicals in conventional cosmetics explained.

Many people use skincare products every day without considering what they are actually putting on their skin. The skin is not a sealed shield, but a living organ capable of absorbing substances.
Certain synthetic ingredients commonly found in conventional cosmetics can disrupt the skin, cause irritation, and over time even place a burden on the body.
Natural skincare follows a different philosophy: to nourish and support rather than mask and suppress.

Below you will find commonly used ingredients that are best avoided, and why:

1. Parabens

Parabens are used as preservatives to extend a product’s shelf life. They can interact with the hormonal system by mimicking estrogen-like substances in the body.
This may disturb the natural hormonal balance.
Because parabens are present in many products at the same time, total exposure can quietly accumulate.

2. SLS and SLES

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate create foam in cleansers and shampoos. They cleanse so aggressively that they remove not only dirt, but also the skin’s natural protective barrier.
This can lead to extreme dryness, redness, a burning sensation, and a weakened skin barrier that becomes more vulnerable to inflammation and irritation.

3. Synthetic fragrances

Often simply listed as parfum or fragrance on labels. Behind this generic term can hide dozens of chemical substances, some known to be allergens or skin irritants.
They can trigger reactions such as itching, rashes, eczema, and long-term sensitivity, even in skin that previously seemed problem-free.

4. Silicones

Silicones such as dimethicone give the skin a silky smooth feel, but this effect is misleading. They form a sealing layer over the skin that can interfere with its natural breathing process.
The skin may feel smoother, while its condition underneath can gradually worsen.
Over time, the skin may become drier and more dependent on heavier products.

5. Mineral oils

Mineral oil and paraffinum liquidum are inexpensive ingredients derived from petroleum. They create a film on the skin that temporarily prevents moisture loss, but they do not nourish the skin. As a result, the skin can lose its natural ability to regulate itself and become increasingly dependent on external hydration.
What feels like moisture is often only surface occlusion.

6. Formaldehyde releasers

Some preservatives slowly release small amounts of formaldehyde to prevent bacterial growth. Formaldehyde is known as a strong irritant and has been linked to allergic reactions and skin sensitivity. Even low, repeated exposure can weaken the skin barrier and contribute to chronic irritation.

7. Phthalates

Phthalates are sometimes used to make fragrances last longer. They have been associated with disruptions of the hormonal system.
Because they are not always clearly listed on labels, people may be unknowingly exposed to them over long periods through daily skincare products.

8. Heavy metals as contaminants

Some conventional cosmetics may contain traces of heavy metals such as lead, nickel, or mercury as impurities in pigments or raw materials. These metals can accumulate in the body and are known for their potentially toxic effects.
Even in small amounts, they can cause skin reactions and sensitivity.

9. Artificial colorants

Synthetic colorants are added to make products look more appealing, but they offer no benefit to the skin. Some of these colorants may cause irritation or allergic reactions, especially in sensitive skin.

A more conscious choice for your skin

Natural skincare is more than a trend. It is a conscious decision to support your skin with ingredients that work in harmony with its natural processes instead of disrupting them.
By avoiding harsh or harmful substances and choosing plant-based oils, botanical extracts, and gentle formulations, you give your skin the opportunity to return to balance and function in a truly healthy way.

What you leave out can be just as important as what you put on your skin! :)
